Album Review: Best Girl Athlete – ‘Best Girl Athlete’

Having released her debut album at just 16 years old, garnering a well of critical acclaim in the process, Katie Buchan, aka Best Girl Athlete, has taken on the roll of wunderkind on the Scottish music scene.

Now, two years on, Best Girl Athlete has released her eponymous self-titled sophomore album, and in the process has continued to showcase her maturity as a songwriter and performer. Assisted by her father, Fit Like Records owner Charley Buchan, as well as a number of Aberdeen’s most notable musicians, Best Girl Athlete’s follow up record is an eclectic mix of powerful, emotive songs.

Indeed, the album pushes and pulls at the listener’s ears, and heartstrings, throughout. Katie excels as the figurehead of a talented band, taking you through a maze of genres; from the brass-heavy melodies on first single ‘In Your Head’ to the shimmering second single of ‘Baby Comes’ Home’, where Katie’s vocals are oddly complemented by the rapping of Jack Hughes.

With another single still to come in the guise of the brooding, cinematic, Lana Del Rey-inspired offering ‘Lucy’, it’s safe to say that Best Girl Athlete is not finished just yet, offering fans another slice of her innovative sound before the year’s end.

It’s easy to see why Best Girl Athlete’s reputation continues to burgeon and why the likes of Richard Hawley and Simone Felice hold her in such high esteem. With music lovers far and wide now starting to catch on, this could be the start of a very impressive career in music.

Best Girl Athlete is out now via Fitlike Records.
