Tom Law – ‘Build From Zero’ EP

Tom Law is every teenage girls super crush. He surfs, has bright blue eyes, is absurdly cute and makes laid back summer tunes that could melt even the coldest of hearts.

His latest EP ‘Build From Zero’ is a four track feel good gem, akin to the likes of Newton Falkner or Jack Johnson.  Opener ‘Give It A Chance’ shows off Law’s skills as a musician, playing everything on the track and overdubbing himself to create a vibe so laid back it could be horizontal. With lyrics like “As long as you give it a chance, this could be something special” and “could make gold out of rusty metal” shows Laws intentions and prowess as a songwriter, His voice naturally sits quite high with a hint of a breathy touch making Law sound like he has pored over every line a thousand lines or more. He easily weaves a narrative that makes you go all hazy inside.

Never Met You’ is a different kind of love song, a modern version per say. A story about a love affair that lives through the web and phone calls only, this couple has never met…

There is a slightly odd line in this track too, “You make me laugh more than a kid hitting his dad in the nuts”, it does really fit and he struggles to make it fit with the rest of the track. The chorus is a loud/quite one with stripped back bouncy end.The video is particularly cheesy, it cuts between shots of fans singing to camera and Law himself playing guitar and messing around on his bed trying his hardest to be as cute as possible. It gets sickly quick.

The very Ed Sheeran-esque ‘Move It Along’ is the grittiest song of the EP, “I respect your opinions, respect mine!” shows Law can do more than generic love songs but the track still has a summer, feel good sound if you big hard enough.

The ‘Build From Zero’ EP has some great blue sky tracks but the cutesy vibe that Tom Law is pushing becomes overpowering at points. If he learns to stretch his musical muscles more his next release could be something very special indeed.
