- Don’t get hung up on the gear
Don’t get me wrong, having the correct gear is important for producing music. But it is the producer who makes the music, not the gear. For example, a producer who has no idea what they are doing cannot make a sound, even with the best gear. Whereas a good producer can create great music simply using average gear.
The point is that buying the best gear will not make you any better. Like with anything, to improve your music production skills, it will take time and effort.
- Get stuck in
Don’t be put off by the equipment. It may look daunting, but once you know how each piece works, you will feel more confident.
There are many different music production software programs made especially for beginners. They go through each part of the software step by step and guide you through it. These are ideal for beginners as they teach you everything that you need to know.
When you get a new piece of kit, by all means give the manual a read. But realise that they only way you will learn how to use it, is by actually using it. Instructions can be helpful for setting up new gear, but that is about as far as it goes.
- Use Google a lot
Google has so much useful information about producing music on it and can teach just about anything that you need to know. So if you hit a wall and need some help, turn to Google for advice. YouTube is also great for this, as it has many videos and tutorials available to help you.

- Take inspiration
If you have a favourite music producer, take inspiration from their work. Finding your own sound is difficult and may take some time, but you will find it much easier if you take inspiration from other, more successful producers.
Obviously, don’t copy other producers work. But you can use their tracks for structure, build ups, length ideas, and sound design.
While you may lean towards one genre of music, it is important to experiment with different styles.
You may find that your best genre is one which you had never tried working with before, so it is important to experiment as much possible.
