Southampton complete Wanyama swoop

After much speculation, Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama has completed his move south of the Scottish border and joined Southampton.

The Celtic defensive midfielder, who was a key player in the Hoops’ title victory last year as well as in their victory over European powerhouse Barcelona, has in the last few moments put pen to paper on a four-year deal in a £12.5m move.

In Southampton’s statement confirming the transfer, Wanyama states that many clubs were interested in his services but that he is very grateful for Southampton’s interest and is “looking forward to playing in the Premier League”.

The fee hasn’t been confirmed but the aforementioned figure is being reported widely by newspapers across the relevant regions. Wanyama’s fee represents the new record fee for an outgoing player of the SPL as Celtic’s Aiden McGeady was the previous record-holder after his £9.5m move to Spartak Moscow.

Wanyama’s move caps off an abysmal pre-season so far for the Scottish Champions and with rumours still circulating regarding the future of Gary Hooper, it could get a lot worse for the Glaswegian side.
