Single Review: Swim Fan – Tell Me What U Want

Psych-pop three-piece Swim Fan have just released their third single Tell Me What U Want. The track follows on from previous synthwave tracks Lipstick and Come Over.

Tell Me What U Want is dreamy and psychedelic right from the off as the synths bubble under the surface then whirl into the foreground. The heavy beat is peppered by a funky bass, chimes and electronic flourishes that combine to make the track unquestionably addictive. Spenser Powers’ vocals are breathy and effortless and further add to the carefree dreamscape. The chorus of “tell me what you want, what you wanted, what you need” flows like a breeze and becomes a mantra as the track progresses. Similarities can be drawn with Tame Impala and Soft Hair, two opposite ends of the psychedelic spectrum, as the guitars and synths collide beautifully but Swim Fan have most certainly carved their own niche in the world of psychedelia.

When speaking of the track, Swim Fan said “Tell Me What U Want is about having a fight with an ex, while still living together at the time. The song details the feelings and conversation that take place knowing you both can’t go anywhere.” The accompanying video is a chance for the band to showcase their humour as they tell the story of a mattress salesman who’s unlucky in love.

Formed in Oklahoma City in 2016, Swim Fan have been building up their fan base and have amassed over 25k Spotify streams, firmly presenting themselves as ones to watch in 2021.
