Single Review: Royal Blood – Lights Out

Royal Blood are back! With the killer new single Lights Out. The new track, is the first single to be taken from their yet to be released second album, How Did We Get So Dark?, Scheduled for June 16th.

Lights Out is a stonker of a track keeping the Royal Blood sound of old but injecting a fresh new feel that shows Mike and Ben aren’t just one trick ponies, but growing as talented musicians.

The track starts out life with classic fuzzy rumbling bass and rock solid drums but instead of the sludgy production of old, everything is crisp and the build into the chorus takes a step away from out and out filth with some crooned backing vocals and twinkle of keys to lead us into the heart of the song.

Mikes vocals have matured too, the lyrics feel more thought-out, they comfortably sit in the space where once live rushed aggressive barbs. The malice is still there but everything sounds much more (not so) quietly confident.

The bridge/solo is my favourite part of Lights Out, Ben lays down an extended drum fill that by all past accounts would normally lead into a huge wall of death drop into thick, pummelling riffs but that’s not the case here. Instead we’re treated to a sexy, swag of a solo with a hint funk and it’s fantastic!
