Single Review: Ren Lawton – Today Today Tomorrow

Today Today Tomorrow is the latest single release from North East-based singer songwriter Ren Lawton. The title track from his debut album, out February 2022, Today Today Tomorrow follows recent single ‘Love By Night’.

Today Today Tomorrow is another sincerely earnest song, a style of songwriting that has become synonymous with Ren Lawton’s past releases. Coming in at under three minutes, the single is a breezy, gentle composition that feels like a crisp, winters Sunday morning. Starting with lightly strummed guitar, Today Today Tomorrow is offset by soothing piano notes, the track framing Conor Owen’s (aka Ren Lawton) vocals, allowing the lyrics to take centre stage.

Lyricism is where Ren Lawton places a huge amount of emphasis. Each rack is a vehicle for Conor to display the admiration and inspiration garnered from storytellers such as Bob Dylan and Frank O‘Connor. This is a bold move as the song becomes, at times, too gentle, the music a byproduct of the story Conor is intent on relaying. Blending a fusion of classic songwriting tropes from various genres including folk, Americana and bluegrass, the artist constructs a sound that could be described as neo-folk.

Ren Lawton produces pleasant, delicately formed acoustic music perfect for whiling the holidays, long wintery walks or romantic getaways. The music is not particular groundbreaking, but there is a warmth and familiarity that feels like an old friend; and that, at times, is rather comforting.

Conor’s atmospheric brand of contemporary folk has resonated far and wide. With over 1 million Spotify streams of single ‘Piece of Your Heart’ as well as airplay on Tom Robinson (BBC Radio 6), BBC Wales, BBC Newcastle and BBC Bristol. He has also picked up press support from tastemakers such as Clash Magazine, Folk Radio, Thank Folk For That, Narc, Fame Magazine, Contact Music and many more.

Today Today Tomorrow is out now and is the tile track from Ren Lawton’s debut album, out on 23rd February 2022.
