Synth-pop duo Monarchy have just released Just Give Me Your Love, the second single from their upcoming fourth LP. Ra Black and Andrew Armstrong have been carving their own niche in the electronic music scene and their new single is as catchy as ever.
The track opens with plucky guitars layered over a drum pad beat and gives off summery, Spanish vibes. Ra’s distinctive vocal kicks in and sets the scene: “It’s 5am, heady nights are coming to a close, you take a boy under your wing, and he’s too drunk to find his way home.” The electronic beats become pared back leaving just Ra’s vocal over the guitar strings until the chorus kicks in. His repetition of “Just give me your love” becomes distorted so that his vocal merges seamlessly with the synth. There’s a strong narrative that runs through the track and you can sense Ra’s anguish in lines such as “in a haze you’re stirring, but the way you’re squirming in know you just want my embrace.” A night away from his girlfriend and plagued by anxiety culminated in Ra penning the track. The result could have been melancholy but the beat and rhythm really elevate the track and turn it into a tune you can dance your sorrows away to.
Monarchy have released three albums (Around The Sun in 2011, Abnocto in 2015 and Mid:Night in 2019) and have played at some of the biggest festivals around the globe such as Coachella, Mad Cool, Lovebox and Reading and Leeds. Their electronic party anthems are infectious and I eagerly await their new LP.
