Single Review: Mark Lanegan (IYEARA Remix) – ‘Playing Nero’

Having released a plethora of music over the past 12 months, Mark Lanegan shows no signs of slowing down. The alt.rock legend has collaborated with dark wave band IYEARA on a remix of his album Somebody’s Knocking – retitled Another Knock At The Door.

To celebrate the announcement the band have released single Playing Nero; a wistful, emotive original characterised by Lanegan’s gruff, distinctive vocal style. IYEARA have added their own take on what was already a gorgeous sonnet. Producing an industrial, bleak edge, the track has taken on a propulsive, mechanical ambience that meshes perfectly with Lanegan’s emotive lyrics. On Playing Nero IYEARA have shown their ability to remix individual tracks in a way that enhances a song rather than detracting from, in this case, an earnest splendour that flows through every note.

Comprised of The Duke Spirit guitarist Toby Butler, producer Malcolm Carson and vocalist Paul O’Keeffe, IYEARA announced themselves in 2019 through the release of CONSEQUENCES EP; a record including a cover of Shout by Tears for Fears featuring The Duke Spirit’s Liela Moss. The group have remixed the likes of Laura Marling’s LUMP project, UNKLE, Humanist ft Dave Gahan, The Prodigy, The Boxer Rebellion, Simon Raymonde’s Lost Horizons, Paris Youth Foundation, The Ting Tings, JoyCut and Lusts.

Playing Nero will be the first single to be released from the album, with a remix of post-punk gem ‘She Loved You’ following.

Mark Lanegan Band – Another Knock At The Door (IYEARA remixes) is out on 21st August 2020 and Playing Nero is available to stream and download now.
