British singer songwriter Luca Wilding has released his debut single Heartachers today. The track is taken from his debut album To which is set for release later this year.
Heartachers opens with plucky guitars that sound mesmerising as they echo and reverberate. Wilding’s vocal slices through the strings and possesses an almost angelic air. His wide-ranging vocal is restrained and compliments the gentle guitar plucks. An instrumental at the mid-way point creeps up and then surges like a torrent. The percussion sweeps in with a sense of urgency and harmonies are layered on top of the guitars as the pace is taken up a few notches. Wilding really reaches his stride at this point as he sings “So long those long summers, so long those wild-eyed dreams. We are the heartachers, and there ain’t no song too sweet.” I like how the track builds to a crescendo and the sweeping flow of sound throughout. Wilding labels his music dream-folk and I would say that’s a fitting description for his free-spirited sound.
Wilding wrote Heartachers for a friend who was in the early stages of dealing with mental illness so it’s a track that could resonate with a lot of people. When speaking of Heartachers Wilding said, “Heartachers is about learning to let go of what was. It was meant as a kind of call to arms; an invocation of the strength it takes to overcome the mountains of the mind. It tells the simple story of trying to love someone through all their pain and despite their sadness.”
Luca Wilding is an exciting new talent and I’m intrigued to go on a journey into the sounds of dream-folk.
