Single Review: Liz Asaro – 1000 Years

Up and coming singer-songwriter Liz Asaro has released her new single 1000 Years. With a sound that’s a fusion between rock and electronica, Asaro is most certainly an exciting new musician who intends to make waves across the alternative music scene. Ripples are already being felt with the release of 1000 Years which is a spellbinding infusion of rock, pop and electronic elements.

1000 Years opens in a triumph of electric guitars, brooding and heavy like late noughties era Funeral For A Friend. The heartbeat-esque drum beat sets the pace at slow and sorrowful until Asaro’s angelic vocals sweep in. Her honed, gentle voice provides a beautiful contrast against the macho electronic guitar backdrop.  As the chorus kicks in, Asaro’s voice becomes impassioned and the track takes a more epic turn. Guitars are the backbone of this track and the rock elements come to the fore each time the guitars take centre stage on another solo. In my interpretation, the lyrics “Will you cry out or will you keep it in, afraid of falling but you’re not suffering” touch on themes of struggle and the need for emotional support but not wanting to ask for help. These are heavy topics which could weigh the track down but the fusion of Asaro’s crisp vocal with the power rock production infuses the track with a vigorous energy.

Originally from Lower Manhattan, music has unrelentingly featured in her life, despite it being the last path she intended to follow. Because of her joy of singing around the house to herself and to her children, Asaro started taking guitar lessons. The more her beguiling voice was heard, the more her friends encouraged her to take the next step and see where her talent could lead her. Asaro’s music doesn’t fit snuggly into one category but is an amalgamation of musical inspirations and leans towards the alternative rock sound, with similarities being made to 90s band The Cranberries.

Asaro is currently working on her debut album which undoubtedly will be a feast for the ears and a hidden gem within the alternative rock scene.
