Single Review: Kim Petras – Broken

Kim Petras has just released her infectious new single Broken. The German pop singer’s star has been rising ever since the release of her debut single I Don’t Want It At All in 2017 which reached the Spotify Global Viral Chart. She has since appeared on Charli XCX’s Mixtape Pop 2 and has just completed a string of sold-out shows in Australia where she also opened for Rita Ora.

Broken is an addictive r’n’b-infused pop track that will be played on repeat by Kim’s die-hard fans. It opens with a deep, reverberating baseline before Kim’s smooth vocal kicks in. Her voice is crisp as she sings about the end of a relationship where her ex has already moved on. She sails through the fast-paced verses which lead to the bridge where the pace is taken down a notch. Singing “I used to do it all for you” Kim demonstrates the softer side to her voice. The track is peppered with varied levels of auto-tune but I feel it adds an extra, more electronic, element rather than taking away from what her voice truly is. You can detect the angst in her voice as she sings about the pain she felt as the relationship ended, especially in the chorus of “you made it hurt too much, hope you got, hope you got everything you want” and the bridge of “Every day I hope you’re broken hearted. The r’n’b influence is heavier on this track compared to her previous more poppy offerings such as I Don’t Want It At All and Heart To Break but it’s a style that she rocks with flair. It’s a track about heartbreak and lost love but Kim’s words are feisty, showing her independence, and one of the underlying themes is empowerment.

Broken is available to download and stream now, listen below. Find out more about Kim Petras here.
