Single Review: Kev Sherry – Wasted Days

Having made a name for himself fronting celebrated Scottish band Attic Lights, singer songwriter Kev Sherry has released his debut solo single Wasted Days.

Kev has been prolifically creative over the last 15 years. Attic Lights signed to Island Records having formed in 2005; an era still notable for its decadence at corporate level, enabling guitar bands to sign what would be considered today to be rewarding contracts. Still performing today, the band have outlived many of their peers allowing Kev Sherry to embrace various creative fields. From writing for publications like The New Statesman to writing graphic novel Warpaint – a feminist story about friendship, regret, memory and what taking a stand really means. Wasted Days is yet another illustration of Kev’s ability to straddle disciplines effortlessly and is a perfect single to play on repeat in these current times.

Wasted Days is an upbeat slice of power pop reminiscent of ‘Into Your Arms’ era The Lemonheads and fellow Scottish artists such as BMX Bandits, Camera Obscura and Teenage Fanclub. Buoyantly strummed guitar is accented by Kev’s rasping, emotive vocal, seamlessly building into a glorious, mellifluous harmony that is complimented by the call and response between Kev and the backing vocals. Wasted Days is a track that instantly grabs you offering a soothing, radiant essence that feels like meeting an old friend.

On his forthcoming album release, Kev worked with renowned producer Paul Savage (Mogwai, The Delgados, Franz Ferdinand, Arab Strap) using a guitar borrowed from Tracyanne Campbell (Camera Obscura, Tracyanne & Danny) and a bass guitar borrowed from Francis MacDonald (Teenage Fanclub). He has also collaborated with international artists including Bjorn Yttling, Cerys Matthews and La Casa Azul and his songs have been remixed by Mogwai, Camera Obscura, The Fratellis, Jim Noir and The Vaselines. Wasted Days is the first to be taken from forthcoming album Foxy Orthodoxy which will be out later this year.

Wasted Days by Kev Sherry is out now.
