Single Review: JUNODEF ‘Heights’

Those Nordics have done it again. Swedish quartet JUNODEF are undeniably talented and, lucky for us, they now reside right here in London! Their latest release ‘Heights’ is a majestic post-rock delight that will give you all the feels.

Combining twinkling guitar sounds with rumbling bass notes and sharp glitches of electronica, ‘Heights’ engages you instantly. Lead singer Karin Grönkvist ’s lead vocals are beautifully haunting throughout, reminding us of the likes of PJ Harvey and Bjork. As the dark, brooding middle eight comes into play, she goes into this almost mini-rap verse, which actually works brilliantly and totally in-keeping with the track’s atmospheric mood wonderfully.

Talking about the track, the band elaborate; “the song is about the realisation that something is about to come to an end, and the fear that accompanies that realisation. Heights is the moment just before the inevitable happens, the place where everything is still fine and normal; where time has stopped and all your energy is directed towards enjoying important relationships and moments, but with the underlying knowledge that it will soon be gone.”

‘Heights’ is out now.
