‘Not Feeling Better’ is the latest release by London based indie-garage rock outfit ‘Indigo Husk.’ It is a high energy, boisterous single with a real chant-along chorus and a full-bodied sound, which is bolstered by the addition of some brass. It’s an upbeat indie number informed by the freneticism and spontaneity of punk.
Things get started with a shouted count in, accompanied by a drum roll before the chorus part sets things off properly with fast-paced whoops and vibrancy. This is followed by a more subdued part with vocals and guitar taking centre stage as the drums only slightly accent things on the cymbals. Subsequently, there is a tight breakdown that channels Vampire Weekend, albeit with a more rough and ready feel. As the song progresses the band manage to effectively amp things up and bring everything to a final jubilant crescendo, which really allows the brass to come to the fore.
The apparently upbeat nature of the song is in contrast to the lyrical content which addresses feelings of lassitude and depression, “there’s a deadlift on my back, dragging me to the pavement.” This is a juxtaposition that works well though, as you can’t help but feel at least a little uplifted by the catchy harmonies and grooves that suffuse the music.
The most striking element of the song is the lead guitar part, turned way up and adding a melodic overtone that cuts through the drums and supporting guitars. In fact, at times it is mixed in such a way that it is loud enough to slightly deter from the surrounding music. However, the overall aesthetic of slightly chaotic sound, underpinned by tight interludes and some great melodies makes for an engaging listen. ‘Indigo Husk’ is set to hit the road this summer for a headline tour, bringing their anarchic brand of Indie shenanigans with them. If this track is anything to go by they are a band worth checking out.
