Single Review: Hazlett – Shiver

Australian-born, Sweden-based singer-songwriter Hazlett has released his new single Shiver. The poignant, moving track is taken from his 6-track EP that’s due for release on 4th October.

Shiver opens with stripped-back guitar strums which are overlaid with an atmospheric reverb. Hazlett’s vocal is undoubtedly unique and possesses an almost haunting air. His vocal really shines as we reach the chorus of “It’s a long way back, a short way home. I had a dream then it left me alone. I felt a shiver then it withered away” and its emotive nature adds a striking depth when paired just with the gentle strings. The track takes on a more blissful air when the percussion kicks in and the tempo skyrockets, harmonies adding to the breezy feel for a blink and you’ll miss it interlude. A track about asking yourself if you’ve made the right choices in life, it’s heavy subject matter but is executed in a thoughtful manner that leaves you curious to hear more from this rising star.

When speaking about Shiver Hazlett said “I’ve always had this tug-o-war in my head of how much control do I really have of my life? Do I have to be petrified of every decision I make? Or do I just say whatever will be will be and sit back? I think to some extent whatever path we take life has a funny way of taking us to our destination anyway. But that only happens when we’re led by our gut, we have good intentions and we’re not scared to make the wrong choice. Sometimes it is just about choosing a door to open and being irrationally confident that the universe will guide you to where you need to go either way.”

Hazlett’s move to Stockholm led to him to meet Freddy Alexander who became a close friend and collaborator and who went on to produce Goodbye to the Valley Low. Hazlett’s received praise from NME, Clash and The Line of Best Fit and this year he’s opened shows for LANY, Calum Scott, Passenger and Ocie Elliott. Hazlett’s European tour kicks off in November and includes 6 UK dates:
