Single Review: Chic Gamine – Shake Off Your Worries

After winning a Juno Award for their first self-titled debut album, released five years ago, Chic Gamine are back stronger than ever with their highly-acclaimed album ‘Closer’…

Chic Gamine, often refereed to as ‘The-Five-A’s, consisting of vocalists Ariane Jean, Andrina Turenne, Alexa Dirks, Annick Brémault and drummer and percussionist Alexandre Sacha Daoud, have no for the past five years just been sat around waiting for the sun to shine, this band means business. The band have seen themselves preforming from the Winter Olympics to The South-By-South-West Festival -two years in a row!

Chic also found their way around some of the most prestigious names in music industry, their latest album was released and mixed under the team of Rick Rubin, famed for the production of albums from artist like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Johnny Cash, The Beastie Boys and Macy Grace.

‘Closer’ has seen the group as contenders for Juno’s Album Of The Year Award once again in 2013.

Shake Of Your Worries‘, released December 1st, is the first single to come from ‘Closer’ and marks the debut release of Chic’s first UK single.

Shake Off Your Worries‘ transcends soft soul melodies with a new-modern, yet vintage, twist. The use of foot-stomps and claps at the beginning of the track immediately prick up your ears, this is an old style that we have seen before in old blues traditional and soft Soul and Motown ballads, but this is not a sound that we have heard through the radio-waves throughout this 21st century, a refreshing take on the stereo-world to add an extra ambiance and acoustica to a strong, hip-shaking pop track.

You’re hit a second time by the thundering resonating of these chicks vocals! how these girls have got a pair of lungs on them! The French-Pop singers throw down harmonies sweeter than any Vandellas or Supremes melody could cast, it’s electrifying in a way that you’ve never felt before.

The real meat of the songs shows it’s face half way through when the girls adopt a ‘running train’ rhythm and clash their voices together to the steady sound of that powerful drum-beat, still hand-clapping and foot-stomping all the same, still remaining surrounded by every ounce of class, pride, liberation and force that these girls express, shouting to the sound of a well-needed freedom-rhyme… ”For heavens sake, shake off your worries, before it’s too late..”
