Single review: Black Lips – Squatting In Heaven

‘Squatting in Heaven’ is the latest single to be taken from Black Lips eight studio album, Satan’s Graffiti Or God’s Art? It’s a lo-fi, slacker style of a track, laced with the psychedelic touch of new producer Sean Lennon brought in for Satan’s Graffiti…

After a chintzy opening it drops into a never ending riff that was born for Californian haze and skate videos. It’s good, for about 40 seconds but then quickly fades into mush of bland psychedelic surf punk.

You would think that after eight albums and 18 years together, Black Lips would have changed things up a bit, maybe experimented with their sound. Sadly they haven’t with ‘Squatting in Heaven’.

Maybe it’s just that I’m not a big fan of Black Lips but I feel like they’re not really trying, by churning out uninteresting tunes like ‘Squatting in Heaven’.

Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art? is out May 5th.
