Single Review: 36 Crazyfists – Also Am I

It’s almost five years since 36 Crazyfists last released any new material. The Alaskan band have also signed to a new label (Spinefarm Records) and will release new album, ‘Time and Trauma’ on the 17th February.

New single, ‘Also Am I’ blends metal with the melodic. A familiar trait of the band is their soaring melodic choruses, something that illuminates them in a genre more often deriving from a black pallete. The song starts with a slalom of guitars and drums, breaking briefly before returning full ensemble to get things going.

Lead singer, Brock Lindow is an average kind of guy. Onstage though he is Jekyll and Hyde, perfecting both hard-core and heartfelt vocals. On ‘Also Am I’ Brock sings, “If you were looking for someone to save you, also am I”. This whilst having its own particular meaning, can be appreciated universally by the audience. We are all vulnerable at times.  It’s this vulnerability that endears you to their music.

There is no gimmick with 36 Crazyfists, this is a group of friends playing music they love. Their diversity has produced some fine acoustic and atmospheric songs. A cover of Cat Stevens’s ‘Sad Lisa’ can even be found on second album, ‘A Snow Capped Romance’. The video for ‘Also Am I’ was shot during a camping trip and is simply the band jamming after a few beers. There are no masks, face paint or pantomime associated. 36 Crazyfisits are all about the music.

With a strong back catalogue and loyal fan base, the band continues to concoct a specific type of metal that is both appealing and important. They often tap into the struggle and isolation we feel as human beings, addressing it the best way they know how. This a strong single and will definitely suit live shows.
