Scottish Cup Final Preview: St Johnstone vs Dundee United

The Old Firm sides used to be an ever present part of this fixture; recently though Celtic and/or Rangers’ prominence in these finals has waned a touch. That’s what makes this final so enticing. Celtic crashed out a few rounds ago and Rangers were knocked out by this year’s finalists, Dundee United, in the last round which means this final will have plenty of appeal if not at least because it’s a chance to see someone different win some silverware.

Dundee have a chance to grab their first silverware since the 2009-10 season when they won this same competition, thumping Ross County 3-0 in the final, and with the mercurial Ryan Gould on their side they have as good a chance as any to add to their collection of silverware.

St Johnstone, though, should not be underestimated at all. They finished just five points behind their opponents in the domestic campaign on the way to attaining a very respectable 6th placed finish. Their last silverware came almost as recently as Dundee United’s did, winning the Scottish Challenge Cup in 2007/08 and winning promotion back to the SPL in 2008/09. Finishing so close to their opponents in the league, as well as a rare chance to add some silverware to their collections, will bode well for this being an entertaining final for the neutral fan.

This fantastic-looking final kicks off at 3pm on Saturday the 17th of May and is live on Sky Sports 1.

To get the Scottish fans going, William Hill have decided to give Scotland a glimpse of a different type of football as they’ve released a video of World Freestyle Champion, Andrew Henderson, strutting the kind of stuff that wouldn’t look out of place outside of football’s biggest tournament – the World Cup – that takes place in just under a month.
