Review: Wet Nuns – Broken Teeth

When Blue Cheer released Vincebus Eruptum in ’64, it’s unlikely that they could have foreseen its eventual impact on the world of rock and roll.

Fuzz, manly hollering, borderline collapsible drums and total ignorance of anything as mundane as a click track, the Cheer’s sound can be heard in Sabbath, Kyuss, Screaming Trees, Sungrazer, Dozer, Gonga, or any of the lowdown dirty “heshers” you’d care to mention. Their magic zeal can be heard in this pair of reprobates.

Slack as Ulrika Jonsson cradling a bag of ties, this lead track from Wet Nuns’ upcoming EP (out 18th Feb) is a work of slovenly majesty. If Alabama Thunderpussy are too regulated and the Bad Seeds too elegant, this two piece should be right up your street. Imagine, if you will, a ratted Calexico fronted by Nick Cave in his Birthday Party days, lost in a long night, backed by the thumping, dusty drums of old, weird America.

This is stirring stuff, and if there was no video evidence to the contrary, it would have been hard to imagine this sound coming from just two people.

When this release drops, I’ll be there to catch it. Superb.
