Review: Reading Festival 2013 (Day 2)

Unfortunately the rain came out, the sun hid away for the majority of the day but most importantly, the party got even better.

The cute, summery Darwin Deez put a smile on everyone’s face in the morning despite the rain. They’re humble, endearing and even perform synchronised dance routines in between some of their songs. How can you not fall for them?

Odd Future sub-group consisting of Tyler, The Creator and Earl Sweatshirt, Earlwolf prove they know how to get a crowd going despite the setting (yes, it was midday and raining). As soon as they base drops in each and every one of these songs, there’s no stopping the crowd. Whether you’re inclined to loving rap music or not, there’s no denying that Odd Future are the masters of what they do.

Lambeth based Palma Violets were on fine-form playing to a packed out NME/Radio 1 tent and their debut album 180 released earlier this year might just be a favourite of the year so far judging by the reception they get. Chilli Jesson’s joy of playing the festival can be heard  when he asks the crowd to make yet another circle pit, “Can you guys make one of them circles? I f**king love them!” It’s hot, messy, and a lot of fun.

London dark indie-rockers White Lies made their Main Stage debut at the festival bringing every one of their anthems to quite possibly their biggest crowd yet. The new songs off their latest album Big TV sound just as fleshed-out live as their older material and they certainly look as if they’ve cultivated a fanbase that would stick around to see them despite any clashes.

Hot off the heels of a packed festival season Foals have been celebrating the release of their third commercially successful and critically acclaimed full-length release, Holy Fire. Newer singles such as My Number and Inhaler go down a treat with the audience, and standing still is definitely not a possibility at this show but it’s when the Oxford quintet play their older material that you realise they are future headliners.

If you were in the mood for a party then you should’ve made sure to hit Chase and Status as they create a rave like no other. Every member of the crowd seems to heard each and everyone of these hits on the radio or at clubs and certainly know how to show their appreciation for them. So much so, that the band even pause at one moment to tell the crowd to help each other out because things are getting too rough and people are being crushed at the barriers; they’re definitely a nice lot then.

The first headliner announced, and certainly the one that was on the lips of nearly everyone talking about the festival beforehand, Eminem takes to the stage and his hype man already has people throwing their hands back and forth at the rap star. It’s certainly a spectacle, not only does he bring the British singer-songwriter Dido out for a guest appearance but the man can spit incredibly fast and strut around the stage as if it’s his own personal playground
