Review: Olly Murs – Wembley Arena, London – 10/03/2013

Olly Murs is the pop artist renowned for his appearances on X Factor, in 2009, but, after failing to be crowned champion, he has gone on to prove that you don’t need to be victorious in a talent competition to build a solid, successful, career.

After three highly acclaimed albums and a string of number 1 singles, I don’t think even he would have pictured the opportunity of himself headlining a sold-out Wembley Arena show.

However, after witnessing his live performance, you couldn’t bank on the Essex-born singer-songwriter being anywhere else but on a stage.

With incredible coordination and stage layout, it was only a matter of time before Murs had the crowd eating out the palm of his hand. One song in, kick starting with recent single ‘Army Of Two’, and his charm had already taken over, as the capacity crowd simultaneously interacted with chants, “woos” and dance moves that even Haven would be proud of.

Screams from all directions and harmonious shouts from the crowd, on key favourites, alongside the vocal prowess and presence of Murs built for an ecstatic set and atmosphere.

He heads out on tour later in the year to support Britain’s “King Of Pop” Robbie Williams but, judging by tonight’s performance, I don’t think it’ll be too far away until he takes the crown for himself. Whilst Murs’ characteristics make him a delight to watch; his set list consists of a combination of his chart hits to covers, including The Clash’s ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go’ and The Jam’s ‘Town Called Malice’, that made him triumphant to both the older and younger audiences.

He may not be holding that 2009 X Factor crown on his head but, right now, I think that’d be the least of his worries, as he heads for an even bigger, brighter, future.
