Review: Nicki Minaj – MEN Arena, Manchester – 26/10/2012

Controversial and rebellious rapping artist Nicki Minaj has taken the hip-hop world by storm. Renowned for her buttocks, her obsession with luminous wigs and the British accent, she took to the stage in Manchester’s M.E.N Arena to embark on her UK tour and fans couldn’t help but fall in love with her crazy antics live on stage!

Whilst Nicki prepared backstage; her supporting acts kept the fans entertained. Manchester-born Misha B fired away with her solo singles ‘Home Run’ and ‘Do You Think Of Me’, then produced some brilliant renditions of Tinie Tempah’s ‘Frisky’ and Chris Brown’s ‘Champion’/

However, it was the pint-sized singer that people wanted to see, as they continued to scream for her more. However, Tyga’s appearance got the arena quaking, as he burst onto the scene with his smash hit ‘Rack City’, which was followed by ‘Faded’ and ‘Rich Girl’.

The outspoken, Queen of Urban, Nicki kicked-off the tour with songs from her first album ‘Pink Friday’ and incorporated songs from her follow-up, ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded’.

Starting off with ‘Did It On ‘Em’, where fans were encouraged to sing along to the obscene lyrics; but they didn’t seem to mind as it got them on their feet and it was nothing more than expected from the woman who doesn’t restrain!

Sat on a diamante pink throne, as the lights dropped on her, the rapper was surrounded by topless male dancers who lifted her into the air. Whilst rapping her way through ‘Make Me Proud’ and ‘Moment 4 Life’, she continued to address fans at each wing of the arena to make her presence known.

It wasn’t long before she teared through her hip-hop material, shifting from ‘Roman’s Revenge’ to ‘Va Va Voom’ and ‘Turn me on’, before taking a steady approach to her ballad’s, ‘Marilyn Monroe’ and ‘Fire Burns’. Two songs, alone, that illustrate a more vulnerable side to the thick-skinned rap artist; a side we very rarely see!

However, it was a quick return to that fiery character, as the dramatic artist changed costumes, switching back to her usual high-tempo tracks and a change of hair colour of course!

Now sporting a pink wig, Nicki sang along to ‘Check It Out’, ‘Beauty And A Beat’, #1 chart hit ‘Superbass’ and ‘Pound The Alarm’, which had fans jumping and hands shooting northwards!

With her exaggeration, comical dialogues and introduction to alter-ego ‘Roman’, the radiant singer put on a show to be remembered for her fans that got a chance to tap into the fire-breathing and flamboyant world she exhibits.

The grand finale left spectators in suspense, as Nicki took off again for another change of outfit. Engulfed in a pink body suit, teasing fans using a pink gun that fired out t-shirts, Tyga united with Nicki for ‘Bedrock’, which left fans dazzled as the duo continued to dance round the stage.

As Tyga concluded his set by disappearing into the smoke, the upbeat patterns of ‘Starships’ bellowed around the arena leading to an onslaught of fans dancing and jumping along.

Full of roars and passion, the Barbie-esque performer bowed out to end the show whilst thanking the fans that have got her to where she is. As cliché as it sounds, if you want entertainment, Nicki is your woman – It’s never a dull day when it’s Pink Friday!
