Review: Muse – The 2nd Law

Muse are back, YAAAAAY!!!! I’m pleased to say that its good too, not Black Holes & Revelations good but a great improvement on The Resistance.

Since 2009 Muse have again move forward in their sound and have tried new things, one of them being lyrical content “We’re singing about relationships for the first time” and yes the rumours are true, there is dubstep (its well done though!)

The album starts out with Supremacy a huge fist pumper of a song, how this track isn’t the official Skyfall theme tune is beyond me. Its even got the 007  twang at the end! The second track Madness is Muse trying their up most to do sleek and sexy but like a epic rock trio from Devon should be it comes across a tad wrong like a 30 year old man with pure silk pyjamas. Its still a good song in its own right. Panic Station starts with a stompy funk bass line but the vocal overdubs just make me giggle, the catchy chorus uses a clever counting. The post-chorus and brass screws the funk label on tightly. The prelude leads brilliantly into Survival, the better of the two singles out at the moment (Survival and Madness). It’s Muse all theatrical guns blazing with roman solder-esque chanting. The end of this track is a little introduction into Muse dubstep-y.

Follow Me changed for me when I found out the fact that the heart beat at the start of the track is Matt Bellamy’s then unborn son. This fact makes the track a heartfelt ode to his son, how nice! And yes the chorus is dubstep-y but it works so its all good here. Unsustainable is the track from the album trailers, I love the robot vocal drop of  “Unsustainable” into fuzzy guitar noise and the band obviously having way to much fun with effects.
Just a quick note that Save Me and Liquid State are written and sung by Dom (bassist) about his battle with the bottle.

All in all “The 2nd Law” is a good album and is way more fun then their previous efforts, which will anger some fans, but progression always has its enemies.
