Review: Kodaline- Love Like This EP

Having shot up the ladder in the Irish music scene, and now taking their recognition worldwide, Irish Alternative/Indie group, Kodaline, have just released their latest EP- ‘Love Like This’, satisfying fans’ anticipation for their rapidly upcoming début album.

This EP, although following suit of Kodaline’s almost transparent sound, the significant tone seems to adopt a more mellow swing. Leaving the title track aside, the remaining three tracks- ‘What It Is’, ‘Midnight’ and an acoustic rendition of ‘Love Like This’ proceed to break away from the power of ‘High Hopes’, but shadow a more reminiscent sound of the success-filled ‘All I Want’.

Latest single and title track of the EP- ‘Love Like This’, dives in with a catchy opening to this record with an upbeat chorus and the addition of the mandolin building up to a real summer track. For me, song of the EP comes in the form of ‘What It Is’. This track holds some light instrumentals as a mere foundation for Steve’s recognisable vocals, before breaking into an abundance of electric guitar riffs towards the end.

The acoustic version of ‘Love Like This’ is one track bound to be massively popular. Transforming the original feel-good track into a more meaningful story on top of a chilled melody, Kodaline encourage a whole new perspective on the track.

This 4-track EP acts as a wonderful build-up for the massively anticipated début album which is set for June 10th. As a record on its own, it sort of lays back on the older Kodaline sound and balances out with the upbeat classic title track that is ‘Love Like This’.
