Review: Casi Wyn – EP 1

Casi Wyn is a young singer/ songwriter, originally from Bangor, Wales and you can really hear it in her voice. Casi’s debut EP 1 is a mix of floating acoustic guitar against bigger sounding tracks. The EP also includes tracks performed on a BBC Radio Cymru session for Huw Stephens.

She was given an opportunity to recently play at Swn Festival, and her performance on the programme ‘Yn Fyw o Acapela’ was especially memorable. The EP consists of four Welsh tunes and a single English track, but Casi’s vocals are the centre piece, alienating some listeners maybe.

Casi’s vocals help opening track “Canfod” to glide along as acoustic guitar, deep piano and xylophone fill the air. The slightly reverbed vocals create and deep piano an atmospheric sound, hand claps and rhythmic drums fill out the choruses.

“Fan Hyn” is a self-described folk pop song, starting out with a strung out piano and swirling effects as guitar strums join the piano. Casi’s vocals are light and sweet as the track gradually builds to a calm and natural sounding small crescendo.

The gorgeous video has been made as if it was shot on a shaky super 8 film, giving it a long lost summer holiday feel.  Casi stands on the bands of a Welsh river as balloons are released into the sky and the sun shines bright.

“Winter” is the only English track of the EP, story of a summer love lost. Casi’s vocals a so drenched in reverb this track could have been recorded in a cathedral as piano chords and deep heart beat-esque bass echoes before the full band slide in. The chorus has skipping drums, bringing Casi’s vocals of ‘He stole my soul, not even the bird’s sing their song anymore’ alive.

1 shows off Casi Wyn’s raw vocal talent but having a mainly welsh sung debut EP is a risky move.
