Review: Biffy Clyro – Opposites

Biffy Clyro are back on the scene with new massive double album ‘Opposites’. Going straight to number 1 in the UK album charts, their third consecutive top 5 album on release, ‘Opposites’ is the perfect album to mark their first arena tour and recently announced headline slot at the iconic Reading and Leeds festivals.

The album title doesn’t tell the full story of the double album, with both discs containing heavy and more meaningful songs, although the second disc contains the more heavier tracks, old sounding Biffy Clyro to be exact. Songs like ‘Modern Magic Formula’ bring back that old Biffy Clyro sound of albums like ‘Infinity Land’.

Back to the opening disc, album opener ‘Different People’ is a slow starter, an introduction as such before it explodes into life with typical Biffy Clyro riffs, a great opening track which leads into disc one lead single ‘Black Chandelier’, a song that has a feeling of ‘Mountains’ and ‘Many of Horror’ mixed together.

‘The Joke’s On Us’ brings back the sounds of 2007 album ‘Puzzle’, a real in your face song, loud, heavy and contains riffs that will certainly have a crowd in a frenzy.

As your starting to lose attention from a few slower and more lyrically strong tracks, ‘Little Hospitals’ drags you back, the heavy, loud, rock and roll Biffy Clyro are back and the track sets the tone for the explosive, knockout second disc.

Disc two starts with that bone shaking drum solo of ‘Stinging Belle’ followed by heavy guitar riffs and complete knockout track ‘Modern Magic Formula’.

‘Victory Over The Sun’ is definitely a future single, basslines and excellent vocals from frontman Simon Neil build up the tension before the song breaks out into a guitar rhythm that wont fail in getting a crowd on their feet. If there was ever a song were you can feel the raw passion in the Scottish trio, its certainly this song.

‘Pocket’ is another song that certainly wouldn’t be out of place on ‘Puzzle’, but it certainly isn’t out of place on ‘Opposites’ either, another track off the album that proves Biffy Clyro don’t just make awesome sounds, they can write a pretty good song lyrically, too.

‘Woo Woo’ provides the final mosh on this epic album, the distinctive and unique guitar riffs that make Biffy Clyro stand out from the crowd on top of raw, edgy top of your voice vocals, its certainly a song your bound to hear on tour.

‘Opposites’ isn’t an album that will attract a lot of new fans, but we are talking about a band who are about to head out on a sold out UK arena tour and are headlining one of the biggest UK festivals, so personally, I don’t think that will bother them too much. Its a solid Biffy Clyro album, an album that can comfortably sit next to ‘Puzzle’ and ‘Only Revolutions’ as one of the greatest UK rock albums of the past decade at least, that’s certainly not a bad thing.
