Review: Barry Finnimore – What I See EP

What I See is the debut EP form Barry Finnimore, a Dublin based singer/songwriter. Finnimore is a talented fellow, being able to play to guitar, bass, drums and a saxophone and states his influences as The White Stripes, The Stone Roses and Foo Fighters as just a few.

Finnimore has been writing since being a teenager but upped his game when he made one New Year’s Resolution to record his debut album.

‘What I See’ is the title and first track of the EP It’s a chirpy acoustic number as Finnimore’s classic singer-songwriter voice skips along with lyrics like “What I see, when I look at you. I feel the music, you feel it too”. Themes of a good friendship truing into more punctuate the track, “Whatever you want, I’ll give it to you…” as extra guitar strums join to accent the chorus, and help with a mellow feeling solo near the finish.

Finnimore’s debut single ‘When The Sky Turns Black’, hosts Hazel O’Toole and is a dark and moody track, which is aviavble on Itunes and Bandcamp now. Finnimore’s voice hear is deep and slightly reminiscent of Johnny Cashes ‘Hurt’ in places, O’Toole joins for the whispered chorus of “Don’t say anything that can be carried on the breeze or blown by the wind of the listening trees…”.

The whispered vocals teamed with the black and white, arty video for ‘When The Sky Turns Black’ makes for a nun-nerving piece, especially the image of Finnimore and O’Toole with their backs up against a tree, head to toe in black. Kind of reminds me of the chilling villains in classic gangster movies, the ones that are always cool, calm and collected no matter what.
