Live Review: Mabel – Band on the Wall, Manchester

The young and talented Mabel makes her way around the UK for her biggest headline tour.

Following the phenomenal success of ‘Finders Keepers’, spending five weeks in the Top 10, Mabel took time from supporting Harry Styles on tour, to make way for her own spring headline tour.

Support came from 20-year-old London-born Grace Carter, who took to the stage to begin the evening’s show. Although claiming to be recovering from a cold, Carter’s vocals appeared effortless and powerful as the slow piano accompanied her in “Silhouette”. The drums began to pick up the tempo for “Tired” before continuing with a mighty performance of “Fight For You” and ending with “Silence”.

A soulful drum solo introduced Mabel as she graced the stage to cheers singing “Thinking of You”. She then led into the title track of her 2017 EP “Bedroom”, which was written alongside Kid Harpoon and Sarah Aarons (who collaborated with Florence and the Machine and Jessie Ware). Mabel then expressed her happiness in being on her first ever headline tour before throwing it back to her older tracks, “My Boy My Town” and “Talk About Forever”. The catchy riff of “Name on It” had the crowd dancing into afrobeats-style track, “One Shot”, inclusive of some simple co-ordinated arm choreography alongside Mabel’s backing vocalists. Her vocal ability and emotive qualities proved soulful and seamless in “Roses” as the crowd sang back lyrics “Who’s the bigger fool, is it me or is it you? You f***ed with my emotions!

A short snippet of Drake’s “Passionfruit” led into “Come Over” before singing a few more tracks from her debut mixtape “Ivy to Roses”, before ending with popular “Fine Lines”, with the crowd filling in the vocals from the collaboration from fellow-label artist, Not3s.

Surely this was not the end, the encore encompassed a stripped-down solo piano accompaniment to “Ivy” and inevitably, the exuberant “Finder Keepers” had the crowd singing back to a song that changed Mabel’s life.
