Review: Limp

Coming to us from the mind of writer and director Shaun Ryan, independent Irish film Limp is a chilling, abstract horror which follows ‘the deterioration of a relationship told through the eyes of a man whose brain has been curdled by isolation’.

Mr. Grott, a troubled man so desperate for companionship, murders a woman he is infatuated by just so they can be together. He can now live out his dream of having someone to love and be loved in his own chaotic and disorientating world.  However, it isn’t long before both the corpse and thus their relationship begin to deteriorate, and Mr. Grott’s world begins to spiral out of control, unravelling the grim reality and devastating truth of what he has done and what he must do.

The film stars Eoin Quinn (Fair City, Portrait of a Zombie) as Mr. Grott and Anne Gill (Quirke, Kings) as the unfortunate victim of his lust.  Laura Canavan Hayes (Shamocracy, Idir Mná) and Shane Lennon (Fade Street) also star as an inner-city couple with their own complications.

Featuring an exciting and unusual visual style, Limp uses multiple layers of imagery and quick cuts to keep the audience on its toes.  “The style of the film lends itself a more abstract way of storytelling by using collages of imagery to emphasize the lead characters psychosis,” says director Shaun Ryan.

Director of Photography, Kevin Minogue, had a huge influence on the overall look of the film.  Not only did he collaborate with Ryan on the visual style; the two have also collaborated with the editing process.

“The look of the film has been a real testament owed to the long time in post-production.  We had set out to make something [which was] not only a new and challenging story, but also a visual experience that you wouldn’t have seen or experienced before,” says Minogue.

Limp was also produced by Minogue and Ryan through their independent production company, ‘Crooked Creations’, and financed independently as a micro budget film for the sum of €900 with cast and crew donating their time to the project for free.

Having already premièred at IndieCork Film Festival in October as well as recently being screened in Dublin to a sold out audience in conjunction with The Underground Cinema, Limp had its most recent screening in Galway last month care of the Little Cinema crew: Kenny Gaughn, Julia Puchovska and Liam Doherty.  It was introduced by DOP Kevin Minogue and lead actor Eoin Quinn, followed by a Q&A.

“We have screened a number of previous projects at Little Cinema over the past few years,” tells Kevin Minogue. “It’s great to be able to take a project of this scale back to the guys at Little Cinema and enjoy the atmosphere and people that we have always had the pleasure of.”

Having been very warmly received so far with much critical acclaim and interest from distributors, Limp is currently awaiting feedback having been sent to various international film festivals.  In the meantime, it is writer/director Shaun Ryan’s aim to take the film to different venues around Ireland to build an audience and to create a presence in the Irish film scene.  Watch this space.
