Launchbox: TURPAI

I’ve always been a bit jealous of the half-step generation above me. The ones that were actually old enough to go out to gigs and festivals and have enough cash to buy music in the 90s. I did towards the end, but in the early days I would have been at Primary School learning my times tables and discovering the world of music through whatever my mum put on the hi-fi. However, with the wealth of talent that’s kicking around London town and a gig night such as House Of Savages, we get to sample incredible acts like TURPAI first hand. No playlists, no soundcloud link from your mate in America…they’re right here on your doorstep.

Hearing this trio on the ritual scurge in the Soundcloud/online undergrowth for House Of Savages future performers I always have to pinch myself when artists of this calibre are still not signed and are on board for a gig. As a music-lover first (promoter of sorts second), it’s such a humble feeling to invite and greet bands you’ve become a bit of an online fan for to share their live set with like-minded rock fans in the capital. Releasing their self-titled EP in February the blog scene has been fired up with everything this artist drops.

If you’ve ever dabbled in grunge, ‘robot’ rock or shoegaze from the AU, UK, USA region there’s something to latch onto in the triple-offering: “Say”, “Bottom Lip” and the slightly less angst-fuelled “Tree On Fire”. Nirvana (In Utero mode), TigerCub, Drenge…if any of these have ever graced your playlist then you need to give the below a listen. For a band who: “are a duo from London that spend our nights jumping from one off licence to another” and invite us to grab a pint of milk and have a sing along” the result is pretty impressive.

Playing alongside some of London’s top fresh talent including headliners Cheap Meat – who are bringing back the rock vibes of the 00’s and 90’s with equal style and class we cannot wait till Wednesday’s event. Look out for these names at festivals in summer 2016 and you’ll be catching them supporting the international names on their UK tour in no time I’m sure.
