Launchbox: Gelato

Reminiscent of the great rock bands of the past twenty years, but with no signs of cobwebs in the corners, Gelato offer more than just a lot of food porn in a Google image search. With rich melodies that offer more than the power-chords that so many new acts bring to their discography the Foo Fighers and Queens Of The Stone Age influence is strong in London’s most exciting new act.

Now and then when we’re booking up the next House Of Savages night we all hear an act that (only with a few songs publicly available) we are all unanimously pretty chuffed to have on the line-up so early: Gelato is one such band. Having listened through to 1000’s and demos a month of some great, some average and some ‘needs some work’ artists, it’s always a pleasure to bring a real new star to the stage for our friends in the HofS clan.

With the perfect combination of scuzz, durge and flange, these three London lads have their amps emitting the right mix of clear cut melodies, whilst indulging in a bit of post-grunge riot in their songs. “Get My Way” was the first track of theirs I heard and I was instantly thinking of all the brilliant American rock bands of yesteryear and how their sound is so missed in modern music. Yes, of course I’m not saying this band just churn out riffs from the 00’s, but they definitely (and proudly) take that sound and add their own interpretations that rival the likes of Dinosaur Pile-Up and Royal Blood.

If you’re not bothered by everyone’s recommendations from rock bands past, why not get into a fun, exciting new alt. rock act from right here in London town.  When someone invites me to ‘join the party’ on their first EP page on Bandcamp I’m very much up for it.  “Room Service” begins with the enviable bass rumble that the likes of Josh Homme and his crowd can produce whilst “Ruffians” offers a far more upbeat, hum /wail / du-du along hook and melodies throughout. It’s like bringing a little piece of Coachella to East London. And who knows what line-ups Gelato may go onto following this introduction…
