If you haven’t heard of Saint Raymond, a.k.a Callum Burrows yet, it is likely that you will by the end of 2014. Having already released one previous EP, ‘Escapade’, Saint Raymond is an artist that sounds more mature than his age and he shows that on ‘Young Blood’ EP, which sounds like a mixture of The 1975, Bastille and Two Door Cinema Club.
The EP kicks off with the title song, ‘Young Blood‘, which was featured as Zane Lowe’s ‘Hottest Song in the World’ on his BBC radio show a few months back. ‘Young Blood‘ is a track that could easily be the anthem to many teenager’s summer as it oozes pure euphoria as he chants “YOUNG BLOOD! We can’t help what we’re feeling”, too bad it is being released in January. This song is one that could easily take your mind off those January Blues though with its continuous guitar riff that will be stuck in your brain after a few listens.
‘Young Blood‘ is followed up by ‘Bonfires‘, a previously recorded demo by Burrows in 2012, which follows on from the sound of the previous track. Although this song does lack some points in the lyrics category, it does provide another masterful guitar riff, something that seems to be a specialty of the indie-pop sound of Saint Raymond.
‘Thread‘ is the third track on ‘Young Blood’ EP, and it contains more of a build than the previous tracks. Thread is a masterfully arranged song that is full of tempo changes which go along with the more mature and heartfelt lyrics like “she will always be the one with all the answers, she will always be the queen of second chances……I can’t let go”
‘As We Are Now‘ closes out the EP providing more of a calmness from the young singer. By far the slowest song on the EP, ‘As We Are Now‘ shows the more mature writing skills that Burrows poses’. This track is one that thrives from its simplistic arrangement and shows a different side to Saint Raymond.
‘Young Blood’ EP is one that succeeds in showing the maturity gained by Callum Burrows over his adventures in 2013, having supported acts like Haim and Gabrielle Aplin. The EP is not going to disappoint any fans as it provides exactly what you would expect and more from the young Nottingham lad, 2014 is sure to be a big year for Saint Raymond.
