Having shared stages with the infamous voices of Anna Calvi and Suzanne Vega and already built a reputation for his impassioned live performances, Danish artist Lasse Matthiessen has now released a brand new EP.
Flowing with a cinematic majesty and the smooth, dreamy harmonies of Sara Hartman, EP opener and title track ‘When We Collided’, is a truly captivating offering; a perfect introduction to this beautiful collection of alt-folk anthems.
Oozing a subtle emotion-strewn power as twinkling melodies flow alongside Matthiessen’s soaring vocals, second track ‘Sycamore Trees’ brings to mind the stirring charm of José González whilst maintaining its own unique, haunting splendour.
‘Sorte Søer’, on the other hand, exudes shades of the ethereal soundscapes of Sigur Ros, as Matthiessen sings in his native tongue, interweaving rich musical layers with a poignant sense of urgency. Continuing to impress with the sweeping power of his distinctive, heartfelt vocals, ‘Broken Choir’ juxtaposes a raw, dark melancholy with a sparkling, other worldly splendour, before the delicate, emotion-strewn of grace of ‘Alchemist Fire’ brings the album to a close.
A simply spellbinding collection, When We Collided marks Lasse Matthiessen out as a true master of his craft, an artist who we cannot wait to more from in 2018.
