EP Review: JP Cooper – When The Darkness Comes

Get a little closer to JP Cooper and listen to his brand new EP, ‘When the Darkness Comes’.

Manchester born and bred, white guy with dreads and warming cocoa flavoured vocals to follow. Cooper will have you hooked in an instant, but getting the right blend wasn’t like one of those reality overnight success stories you read about in the paper. In fact, this one that has been brewing for the last few years, leading him to being signed to Island Records last year.

‘When the Darkness Comes’ EP is the marshmallow goodness you can indulge in calorie free. Imagine flickering log fires, hot chocolates and snuggling a little closer to your lover. JP Cooper is all you need to unwind to after all the Christmas mayhem. This five track EP will help you escape those January blues and grey skies and make you appreciate those cosy nights in.

The EP opens slow offering you the soft wafers of Coopers vocal range before igniting into full swing on family-tugging heart strings as he sings, ‘ You’re daddy’s little solider and mothers handsome light.’ Holding the sugar cube of cuteness, this easy on the ear track is a personal favourite. Exchanging wafer for a gooey marshmallow Satellite is the obvious stand out track of the EP. Having gathered the interest of 60,000 views prior to the EP release this song remain the strongest of the tracks offered. The third track in is the sprinkling of cocoa dust you need at this point. Making things a little more interesting with some uptempo jazz beats and upping his vocal register this track is a reminder that hot drinks do cool. Expecting Grey Skies to be cream on top I’m afraid it’s a sour finish for what is a very strong EP.

If you are a fan of Ed Sheeran, Saint Raymond or Kwabs you will undoubtedly fall in love with this little number. Set to feature with BBC Sound of 2015 nominee and fellow label-signee George the Poet don’t snooze for too long before listening to this little beauty.
