EP Review: John Gaughan- Self Titled

Young Irish singer/songwriter, and Voice of Ireland sensation John Gaughan was once posed a risk of falling into the “talent show musician” stereotype, but his new self-titled EP says different…

Beginning with an almost eery, progressive sound of electrical solidity, it comes across as a strong EP from the word go. ‘Not Enough’ sets the bar with a powerful foundation and an anger-filled tone attached to it.

Stand-out track of the entire EP, ‘Not Ready To Miss You’ follows this with a piano-based track to pull on your heart strings  immensely, from beginning to end. This extremely emotion-punching track, entailing strings to accompany the gentle keys, forms a level of ground for John to be seen as a respectably established singer/songwriter in his own right.

Unfortunately, the second half of the EP doesn’t shine as bright as the first and sort of lets the sound down with ‘Take Me Back’. Breaking the consistent quality of the first two tracks, ‘Take Me Back’ came as a disappointment to my expectations. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good song, and even more impressive live, and it could very well appeal to many many people, but you could say I’m here to over-analyze a bunch of sounds broken into approximate 3 minute intervals, and all things considered, this just didn’t emphasise the slick nature the previous tracks had demonstrated.

This self-titled EP ia quite a satisfactory EP to set John further on his musical journey in which we’ll hopefully be granted with more depth-invading tracks similar to ‘Not Ready To Miss You’, because that, in all circumstances is an outstanding tune.
