EP Review: Jack Ryan – Take Me To The River

Following the very successful release of his debut EP ‘Strong’, Dublin singer/songwriter, Jack Ryan has embedded more depth and intricacy in his latest ‘Take Me To The River’.

Diving into the forceful chords of title track ‘Take Me To The River’, the Rock tinge and drum beat sets the EP up for a promising journey. About one minute in, the track sort of switches dramatically from a steady alternative rock feel to a real upbeat folk track, with rock still laying at its roots.

Start Over Again’ is most definitely the stand out track of the EP for me. A real catchy melody and well written lyrics. The chorus, consisting of a tune bound to get you singing along, goes through the motions of “gather up your memories, start over again, run ’till you fall and fight till the end”. Also showcasing Jack’s range when he breaks to “oh oh ohhh oh”, it’s one track I can’t wait to see live.

The EP closes on ‘Better Than Me’, another impressively tangible track holding onto the unique vocal approach Jack seems to unleash throughout this EP as well as his previous ‘Strong’.

This EP could very well be the game changer for Jack. Plenty of tracks to hold up an incredible atmosphere at live shows and festivals as well as iPod essentials. Watch this space!
