Hawk have never been afraid to write music that makes a powerful statement. Despite not wanting to call themselves a political band, there is no denying their social awareness within each track on their stunning latest EP ‘She Knows’.
Previous single ‘Take It Away’ was written after lead singer Julie Hawk’s friend had been followed home and consequently blamed for being out on her own at night. Julie says that comments like that “miss the point and are the main cause of the problem” in that it’s not the fault of the person being followed but the man who takes away her freedom to walk back home on her own. ‘Take It Away’ expresses Julie’s anger on the topic perfectly; filled with heavy, pulsating guitar chords and Julie’s haunting, signature vocal taking centre stage.
Following on effortlessly are ‘Static and ‘Mirror Maze’. The former sharing an equally poignant message, shining light on those in power who pay lip service but fail to insight real change. Meanwhile ‘Mirror Maze’ is about what society expects from us from a female perspective. Both tracks evoke a new energy to the EP that we haven’t seen from ‘Take It Away’, introducing a classic indie pop feel, with strong melodies and lyricism.
Final track ‘Ghosts’ closes the EP perfectly. The track is full of desperation and strength, allowing Julie’s celestial yet visceral vocals to break through once more and completely blows us away. Fan of Daughter and Warpaint will feel completely at home here.
With ‘She Knows’ Hawk have once again delved into new territory and successfully so. The four-piece manage to touch on difficult subjects effectively without it feeling as though its been rammed down your throat. All five tracks are hauntingly beautiful in their own way, once more showing that Hawk are still the undisputed kings and queens of alternative indie rock.
