EP Review: To Be Frank- Half The Man

Following a summer of festival succession, including performances at the likes of Latitude and Reading, electronic producer/singer-songwriter, To Be Frank, recently released ‘Half The Man’ EP…

This five track EP is filled with electronic bursts of energy-infused rhythm and shadows the compliments of Frank’s first release ‘If You Love Her’.

Opening on title track ‘Half The Man’, glitches of synth ooze across a beat-accompanying echo of vocals. A steady drum beat peeking in and out of the foundation intrigues quite a thrill in the melancholic background noise. A repetitive chorus of “I’m still in love with you” swiftly bounces across the track again and again.

The second track on the EP, ‘Play’, is an interesting one. It comes into play (excuse the pun!) on a gentle, easing tone, falling quite short of the usual electronic burst. A real calming track capturing a more singer/songwriter stance than the previous track, and in fact, the sound we expect from To Be Frank- but it does his vocals justice. To be fair, as different as it is, ‘Play’ is a fighting candidate for stand-out track of the EP.

Track 4 goes back to title track ‘Half The Man’, but with a twist; and that twist goes by the name of Sam Scott. This shiny, Sam-equipped version of the glitchy, upbeat track adds that bit of depth and versatility to the EP before climaxing on the already released, acclaimed final track, ‘If You Love Her’. What is there to say really? A top notch track- emotive, vocally impeccable, and just plain good vibes.

Hats off to you, Frank.
