EP review: BROODS – Self Titled

Discovering a new band is always incredibly exciting, especially when the first song to hit your ears perfectly satiates your musical tastebuds.

You can never go wrong with a male/female musical duo, whether it’s the forward-thinking synthpop of Yazoo, the ethereal and beautiful Electronica of Frou Frou or the rich club subtleties of AlunaGeorge. Enter now the, wait for it, brooding vibes and beats of BROODS.

Lorde was New Zealand’s one-to-watch in 2013 with her Joel Little assisted debut album ‘Pure Heroine’. 2014 could spell more success for the producer as he collaborates with this beguiling brother-sister duo, made up of Caleb & Georgia Nott.

BROODS’ music weaves seamlessly between lush Electronic soundscapes and bewitchingly moody Ambient-RnB. Singer Georgia’s voice combines the fluttering innocence of Ellie Goulding with the effortless emotion of Imogen Heap, a mixture that perfectly compliments older brother Caleb’s instrumentation.

Debut cut ‘Bridges‘ is a chilled out Electronic Pop anthem that recalls Sub Focus’ ‘Out The Blue‘ on a lazy afternoon with more than satisfying results.

UK debut single ‘Never Gonna Change‘ is constructed around the aforementioned “bewitchingly moody Ambient-RnB” and brings in a splash of pulsating Alternative Pop to create an hypnotically dark painting that enraptures listeners from the first second.

The EP shows a clear influence in Ellie Goulding, the pop production of ‘Halcyon‘ can be heard in ‘Pretty Thing‘ with it’s foundations built on vocal cuts to provide an enjoyable pop melody. And influences of Goulding’s debut album ‘Lights’ can be heard in the lush and chilled Folktronica of ‘Taking You There‘.

The 6-song set ends on an exceedingly brilliant note with ‘Coattails’. A thunderous Alt-Pop/Electronica moment jam-packed with deliciously dramatic melodies and lyrics where Georgia effortlessly flies through the highest heights of the song’s magnificent reach.

The EP is available for download now. With rumours of an album to follow in August.
