Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam cast in 50 Shades of Grey.

After months of speculation, Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam have been confirmed as the leads in the 50 Shades of Grey film.

E L James, author of the controversial erotic novel, took to Twitter today to announce that the pair would play the roles Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.

“I am delighted to let you know that the lovely Dakota Johnson has agreed to be our Anastasia in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.” She wrote.

Shortly after, she announced Hunnam’s casting, saying: “The gorgeous and talented Charlie Hunnam will be Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.”

For anyone who has miraculously managed to avoid hearing about the book since it’s release in 2011, the ‘mummy porn’ trilogy follows the unconventional relationship between college graduate Anastasia Steele, and troubled business man Christian Grey. The trilogy quickly became infamous for it’s graphic scenes of bondage and sadomasochism.

Countless stars, from Emma Watson to Mila Kunis, have been linked to the project, but the role of Ana went to lesser known Johnson. She’s previously had small roles in films including 21 Jump Street and The Social Network.

Newcastle born Hunnam is perhaps best known for his lead role in TV drama Sons of Anarchy, and more recently as Raleigh Becket in Pacific Rim. He also isn’t shy of taking his top off, which will probably come in handy.

Sam Taylor-Wood will direct Fifty Shades of Grey, which will be released on August 1, 2014 in US cinemas, with international details to be announced.
