This August at House of Savages

This weekend saw the start of the new Premier League season and it has had a strangely musical influence. Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri claimed that local band Kasabian’s song “Fire” motivated his players to play like warriors and Manchester United’s Louis Van Gaal went one better by actually singing (badly) The Beatles “When I’m 64” in his post-match press conference. Despite this, it might surprise you to know that football and music have at best an odd relationship. The idea of recording a song in homage to your favourite club is one that should definitely be viewed as a bad one. While there is the occasional classic (New Order’s “World in Motion” or Fat Les’s “Vindaloo”) there are far more that should never of seen the light of day (Ant and Dec’s “We’re on the Ball”). Thankfully our line-up at this month’s House of Savages is not only a cracker, none of the bands have ever attempted a football song, not one they’re willing to share anyway.

The Kumari

Described as “lively psychedelic garage rock” by Steve Lamaq after he featured new track “Walking” on his 6 Music Recommends show The Kumari have already received support from not only UK media but have also seen coverage in France. They will be heading out to play shows in Spain soon after gracing the House of Savages stage giving them a truly international scope. I would definitely echo Mr.Lamaq’s sentiments on the bands style (who am I to disagree), comparing them to a Stone Roses-type, however other songs of theirs like “I’m Sad” or “Until That Day” would be right at home in the 60’s alongside Manfred Mann or Small Faces.

Dan, Alex, Ollie and Lee play Alt-Rock with crunching guitars and some great hook lines (“Would you like me, if I was a real person too?” from “A Real Person” is one that particularly caught my ear). Obvious comparisons like Nirvana immediately jump out, but I would also point to more modern contemporaries in The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, but with a welcome added gusto in the way the vocals are delivered. Coming out of what seems to be a particularly busy South-West London scene they have played shows at Camden’s Fiddler’s Elbow and Hackney’s Power Lunches and with the addition of new material to an already strong offering are sure to continue their forward momentum over the next few months and years!

Listening to “Sitting by Your Side” can’t help but put a smile on your face, it’s just one of those songs that makes a sunny day that much better. The first comparison that jumps into my head for The Dark Tides is Alabama Shakes, the tuneful blues rock with active basslines and a guitar line laden with 7th chords is a perfect summer soundtrack. The only downside, there is only the one song for me to listen to. Can’t wait to hear more in a few days’ time!

Limited

Continuing the summery feeling and completing this month’s line-up are pop-rockers The Limited. Releasing their first full EP Pseudoscience this year they’re certainly on a charge, their music is full of seamlessly delivered vocals (with occasional well placed harmonies) over lively instrumentation. Having played some impressive venue’s recently such as The Borderline and Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen we’re delighted that they will also be gracing our stage. Goo Goo Dolls, Ben Howard and maybe a little Counting Crows are influences that I’m getting from listening to the EP, the guys will certainly be a great way to end a summer night of live music.

Looking forward to seeing you all The George Tavern on the 13th of August to meet the best in new alternative rock in London.
