When Bring Me The Horizon first released the single “Drown”, fans new and old had mixed opinions about it. Many enjoyed the group’s new sound and embraced their new style. Other older fans missed the heavy, metalcore sounds of the band, the kind that was heard in previous albums like “Count Your Blessings” and “Suicide Season”.
Personally, I’m with the former more than the latter. Sure, it was surprising to hear this come from the same band who sung “Tell Slater Not to Wash His Dick”, but the band has definitely pulled off this new approach to music. So when the band dropped their single “Throne” and plans for a new album, many people – myself included – looked forward to the eleventh of September with eager anticipation.
And you know what? The album is golden.
This is a totally unique sound for the band, but it is a far cry from a bad sound. While there is no hint of the band’s original material, it sounds a lot like a softer version of their previous album “Sempiternal” and it is a refreshing piece of music. In the commentary for “Drown”, Oliver Sykes – the band’s front man – describes the album as being about depression and celebrating depression, which has been a pretty common theme throughout all of Bring Me’s album and it is reflective in a lot of the song’s lyrics on their latest album.
One of the many reasons why so much extra effort was put into the writing and making of the songs on this album is also down to the success of “Drown”. On the same commentary of the track, Oli talks in detail about it wasn’t supposed to be on the album at all, but due to a popular demand from fans, the band decided to stick it onto the album, also commenting that the song “deserved its own place rather than sandwiched between two albums”. However, the band additionally didn’t want to stick it onto the album to seem like it was only there to fill it. So, the band came up with the agreement to only put the single on the record if they could come up with ten other really strong songs, so no one could complain about the band running out of ideas and simply putting on the song as filler.
In conclusion, the album “That’s the Spirit” is defiantly worth a listen. Though the band is drifting away from their old image and old sound, new fans will defiantly like this song and even old fans too. This is easily one of the best albums to drop this year. The original goal the band made for this album of having it full of only really strong songs has easily been a successful one, from a personal point of view. Additionally, as a huge fan, it’s a happy sight to see Bring Me the Horizon receive a popular demand from this album, and become more recognized within the musical community than before.
