Album Review: Pronto Mama – ‘Any Joy’

With the release of their new album Any Joy, Glaswegian six-piece Pronto Mama have demonstrated their ability to create something not only hugely compelling, but thoroughly enjoyable. With an eclectic array of genres fused into one, there isn’t a dull moment throughout; it’s an undoubtedly engaging listen.

Whilst album opener ‘Bottom Feeder’ oozes gentle folk melodies, the record continues in more of an indie-rock vein. As ‘Cold Arab Springs’ hits you like a ray of sunshine with its jangly melodies and catchy hooks, ‘Arabesque’ is an utterly uplifting and insanely infectious offering, exuding a contagious joy as brass-filled refrains are played with a riveting energy.

Elsewhere on the album, the band’s humour seems to shine through. As ‘Rubber’ is propelled by lilting melodies and sunny indie vibes reminiscent of the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club, ‘Double Speak’ races with scuzzy beats and anthemic hooks that’ll stick in your ears on first listen.

Bringing the collection to a close is ‘Memory Song’; appearing to end the album how it started, with a touching, folk-inspired ballad, Pronto Mama have contained the energy and uplifting wit of the rest of the collection within these two poignant moments of reflection.

From gentle thought-provoking ballads to the emphatic energy and whirring wit of uptempo indie-pop delights, each and every offering on this album is indeed a true joy to behold.

Any Joy, the new album from Pronto Mama, is out now via Electric Honey.
