Album Review: Moviestar – ‘Stupid People / Happy Days’

Already building quite a reputation across their native Norway for their memorable and explosive live performances, Moviestar transcend genre and all expectations with new album Stupid People / Happy Days.

Kicking off with the scuzzy hooks and whirring beats of ‘Stupid People’, the album instantly hits you with Moviestar’s unique, vibrant energy and electro-punk vibes, in the vein of the likes of The Go! Team. Continuing the high-octane power, tracks such as ‘Fortune Teller’ and ‘Trip To Mars’ are filled with fuzzy, reverb-strewn riffs and funk-fuelled energy, making for perfect dance-punk anthems with shades of the brooding, attitude-filled vibes of CSS.

There are moments of reflection on the album, however. With tracks like ‘Chosen Ones’, ‘Lonely’ and ‘Love Song’, the pace drastically slows as swooning vocals float atop ethereal, twinkling melodies, stopping you in your tracks with their emotion-rich splendour.

From the sugary punk-pop of the likes of ‘Ronny’ and the jangly, uptempo cacophony of ‘Technology’, to the brass-filled melodies of album closer ‘Happy Days’, this collection continues to take you by surprise at every turn. Just when you think you have them sussed, Moviestar throw in a futuristic curveball or healthy helping of sarcasm to keep you utterly intrigued.

Fusing together an eclectic fusion of sounds, Moviestar have succeeded in creating something  wonderfully wacky, and undeniably other-worldly. Exuding their distinctive rainbow-coloured fuzz, alongside poignant tongue-in-cheek social commentary, Stupid People / Happy Days is  a sparkling and immersive collection of magnificent sonic delights.
