Album Review: Law Holt – ‘City’

After an accident that nearly cost her her sight, singer-songwriter Law Holt is now back to creating her beguiling style of music, and has just released her debut album.

City is a genre-defying collection of unique electro-pop, filled with one innovative creation after another. Opening with catchy pop anthem ‘In The City’, the album starts as it means to go on; powerful, and filled with glitchy beats and Holt’s distinctive, impassioned vocals. An offering beautiful in its discordant cacophony.

‘Closer To That’ oozes whirring, electronic sounds and intense pounding beats – filled with twinkly beats alongside Lauren Holt’s soaring, gritty vocals, it oozes a dark, eerie power.

Lightening the tone somewhat is ‘Summer’s Coming’. With its bright, uptempo electro melodies and a catchy refrain, it flows with a welcome, gentle emotion. Along with latest single ‘Love Drive Through’, ‘Just Another Break Up’ is filled with catchy pop melodies juxtaposed with Law’s fiercely passionate, soulful vocals. Throughout every track, in fact, Law Holt manages to perfectly fuse together contrasting elements to create something stunning.

My highlight of the album, however, would have to be ‘Spit’. Oozing its haunting electro beats and the deep, intense power of Holt’s vocals, a cinematic, sweeping passion flows throughout this utterly unique offering.

After listening to the album in its entirety, it remains impossible to pigeonhole Law Holt. With all its beautiful complexities, alongside the incredible power of Lauren Holt’s vocals, City is a simply stunning creation from a wonderfully innovative artist.

City, the debut album from Law Holt, is out now via Soulpunk.
