Former Westlife Sligo man, Voice of Ireland mentor and now newly-made solo artist, Kian Egan has just released his debut album ‘Home’.
I think it’s best to say straight off – the album is safe. It’s nothing to blow your mind. But let’s look at where Kian has come from. The album holds a musical universe and a half of distance from his previous encaged sound as part of Westlife.
Now we can go on and look at it from a generic chart-friendly pop album point of view…
First and title track ‘Home’ is a good, upbeat tune. Flourishes of electric guitar is a definite step up from expectations.
Putting his own unique spin on Rascal Flatts’ ‘What Hurts The Most’, it worked well. Equally executing covers such as Hoobastank’s ‘The Reason’ and Lady Antebellum’s ‘I Run To You‘ featuring the female vocals of Jodi Albert liaised in harmony.
Stand out track of the album for me was Kian’s more rocky 3 Doors Down cover of ‘Here Without You’, resonant of a Daughtry vocal approach.
An all-round decent debut, but you’d miss the adventurous diversity and slight risk you look out for in a new release.
