Album Review: The Jezabels – She’s So Hard

Imagine Daughter, The XX, Little Red, Evanescence and Mumford and Sons all rolled into one. What do you get? The Jezabels! With their up tempo sound and nostalgic vocals, this four-piece, indie, alternative rock and disco pop band give you this intense sound that you just fall in love with after the first 10 seconds of a track.

‘She’s So Hard’ on the album ‘Dark Storm’ is the track that hit me most. It’s one of those tracks where you can sit alone, in the dark, eyes closed against a wall, and really relate to the story being told. Lead vocalist Hayley Mary sings in both third and first person. Almost as if she’s luring the listener into her past experience. By looping ‘She’s So Hard‘ within the first chorus yet changing it to “i”m so hard” as the song goes on, almost not to limit expectations within the lyrics. It gives the audience a chance to first relate, it gives you a sense that Hayley is actually singing about you; yet changing it to her personal emotions in the second part of the song, almost as if to engage with her listener, to let us know we are not alone in our emotions.

‘Easy to Love’ is another track that I absolutely adored after first listening. It was certainly on repeat for most of that day. Simply using piano to creep into the song, you really feel the upbeat tempo used when the drums kick in after the first few lines of the song. Her high pitched vocals contrasting with the deeper backing vocals show off her extended range, really standing out amongst the calm piano yet heart-racing, energetic drum beat kept behind most of the track. The wails of her voice which extend over a jazz felt, alternative rock based instrumental really bring you out of your seat, this is one track you just can’t stay still throughout.

With their husky vocals and echo-soaked guitar riffs, this quirky yet mysteriously goth like band bring you the sweetest songs with the most hauntingly beautiful melodies. You’d be absolutely mad to miss out on this masterpiece of a band.
