Edinburgh’s Fuzzystar aka Andy Thomson recently released his infectiously catchy, feel-good album ‘Telegraphing’ and its well worth a listen.
Kicking off with the critically acclaimed single ‘Angel Transported’, you are immediately taken back in time into the world of upbeat, indie-pop akin to the likes of The Cribs or Darwin Deez. Thomson’s soft, colloquial vocal feels completely at home here, and so do we. ‘Birthdays’ takes a slower pace, almost ethereal, but still just as captivating and hypnotic. Thomson then bumps up the pace once more for ‘Eagles’ but this time with scuzzy guitars and pulsating drums that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Dinosaur Jr. album.
As you work your way through the album, the colours and layers within each track are plentiful and lyrically stunning and relatable. Finishing on a personal favourite, ‘High Friends’, you feel as though you’ve spent an afternoon with Andy, getting to know him, ending with a beer in hand and sipping it in the sunshine with an old friend.
Indie-pop may not be what it once was but its certainly not dying and Fuzzystar is proof of that.
